This blog is dedicated to Jesse and Maya's Monday morning section of Introduction to Experience Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design, Winter 2009.
Concept 1 (Sliding Picture puzzle of large scale print)
This is a pretty good concept that serves multipurpose (as a toy and decoration) and you don’t need to clean up or put things back in place after playing with it. However, it might be hard to move the blocks if it’s hung on the wall without being gentle and careful. Also, the size of the tiles would have to be very accurate or else there will be a problem with sliding them. Furthermore, the empty block would always end up at the top due to gravity.
My suggestion would be to design something decorative and removable to place in the hole just to hold the above tiles in spot. If this is supposed to be something large, more tiles or maybe different sizes will sure make it more interesting to play with and more combinations available.
Concept 2 (Marshmallow Cannon)
This will be a little harder to construct. It should be fun to watch the way people reacts to it. But it will definitely make a big mess and won’t be a good idea to shoot indoors. I was wondering how many marshmallows the gun can hold? It would be a good idea if it can contain more than one since no one want to hold on to a bag of marshmallows along with the gun. If the tube is designed so that people can suck marshmallows in it, might be a little harder to clean thoroughly (don’t want anyone with a stomachache).
Concept 3 (Catapult Set)
This is my favourite one, it’s fun and it helps you relax while working on something frustrating. It would require some skills to make the structure workable, it looks fragile in the sketch. Sure don’t want something to crack or break while you are rushing to finish an assignment. On second thought, maybe it’s better to play with it just for fun, it would be annoying to miss the bin if I am rushing through my assignment and my desk’s usually scatter with stuff. Normally I don’t crumple papers up in a ball, since I put them in the recycle bin and the bin is not really that big. But this is a pretty good concept and I can always aim it at something or someONE else other than the bin.
Concept 4
More details needed for this one. I am not sure how it works, are they all separate components or is there a board or some sort that comes along. But it’s sure fun to paint them yourself. Good for D.I.Y lovers.
Concept 5
Good thinking but it’s not really practical. It’s more like a prank than a toy. Sometimes people, especially kids, like to peek into the hole even from the outside and it might not be a good idea to attack them in the eyes. But the picture/image part is a good idea.
Experience design is the practice of designing products, processes, services, events, and environments - each of which is a human experience – with the specific focus of the design activity being the quality of the user experience. In turn, the quality of any experience is a combination of factors which include individual or group needs, desires, beliefs, knowledge, skills, experiences, and perceptions. Experience design combines technological innovation with social innovation, psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, architecture and environmental design, information design, ethnography, brand management, interaction design, service design, storytelling and heuristics.
