Physical Logistics

Here is the mapping of the site with most of the objects involved ( the legend is incorporated for you to understand). There are a few things we need to get settled which are:

1) where the benches will be, most likely they will be beside the projectors since we cannot block the hallway, but any comments on this will be appreciated.

2) where the cameras and seats (for the contestants) will be placed. Either against the wall, or in the middle of the hall way.

3) where exactly the table and seats for our event members will be positioned (our group was thinking between the pillars so it is out of the way)

4) Others, please mention/recommend that we need more tables and chairs

Items (again comment if there is more so we can send a final list to Jesse)

- 2 DV cams (hard drive)
- 2 tripods
- 2 projectors
- RCA cable (x3 : 50' each)
- Duct tape ( for cable)
- Cord adaptors (x4)
- Extension cord
- Bumpers (x 4)
- Image (when there is no contestant, recommendations are wanted - ideas so far = image not related to staring contest)
- 2 benches (already in hallway)
- 1 table
- 4 chairs

Items to buy:

- RCA cable (I checked out Active Surplus and they have a WIDE variety of RCA cables and I don't know myself which specific one to get... ie. 18' A/V cable 3 RCA audio video $14.95 and 25' RCA audio left/right ext. $4.95 and more!....SO please if anyone can purchase the right one (since I don't have anymore cash because my last $20 went to this project) it would be appreciated. We need another 50')

Other:

- I will be bringing a white sheet (along with a steamer to get rid of the creases) just incase we do decide to tape something up because of the concrete wall (this way we don't have to use paper which is material waste)

For my group:

REMEMBER

- cords = color coordinate ;)
- Frank (1st year A/V) has reserved 2 cams and 2 tripods for us
- Still frame (for image when there is no contestant)

FOR ALL GROUPS:

We need ANY comments/recommendations by wednesday for anything mentioned above, that way we can be organized.

ONE more thing:

The contest board needs too be added in as well so any recommendations are wanted (remember to take into effect where the table and chairs for our members will be included according to other comments and the final proposal that will be posted in the end)

PLEASE COMMENT, WE NEED ALL IDEAS AS POSSIBLE TO WORK WITH

dare2stare.com email

Hi Class,

A generic email address has been setup for our event. It is info@dare2stare.com and it forwards directly to Josh and Katie. As the coordinators of the event, I think that any interested parties' questions should be directed to them so the responses about the event are consistent.

Could the promotions group please change the contact email on the event page to this new email address only?

Great work today!

ACTIVATE!! Budget

Hi Teams,

Based on the number of people in our class and the mandatory payment into this project of $20 per person we have a budget of $380.

I promise to keep all of the money safe and secure. In order to facilitate this I will only be able to reimburse those who make purchases for the project if they clear the purchase(s) with me prior to making them and provide me with an original store receipt for the purchase(s). Providing a receipt is crucial to being reimbursed.

The remaining balance of cash will be divided by the total number of people in our class (assuming all chip in) and returned to each of you the week after the project is over.

Please be prepared to provide me with the estimated amount of money you will require to make your purchases so funds can be allocated accordingly.

Cheers,
Brad

Revised Logo and T-shirt design! Comments plz!

Hi, everyone.

Based on the comments of your guys, I made some changes.
Because of the technical difficulties with printing on t-shirt, I can't make logo really small, so I would not change it on the back.

Plz choose either A or B for the back of T-shirt.

Also from Jay's suggestion, Do you guys think we need to switch the front and back?

Comments Plz!

Logistics Group!

could every one in the physical logistics group please contact me so we can get organized
db08ic@student.ocad.ca

or post comments on this so we can discuss everything we need to do

BRING $20 NEXT WEEK!

Everyone must bring $20 next week. Anyone who doesn't will be penalized 20% of their Project Three mark. It seems like you'll be getting most of it back, but it's still essential that the money be collected to cover any unexpected expenses. Brad will be collecting the money and keeping careful track of it. Please do not spend any money unless it has been approved by Brad.

Your Location(s)

I went and checked out a variety of projection wall possibilities (something I should have gotten you to do, but it needed to get done), and the spot shown had the best combination of darkness, traffic, and proximity to potential contest locations. The staring contest itself can either take place along one side of the Auditorium, or along the wall in front of the 1st year shop, if you can't secure RCA cables long enough to reach the Auditorium.

Two things of note:
  • Someone should find out right away about the RCA cable. There is definitely a maximum length. Ask at A/V, and search online.
  • Any cables that run along the floor will need proper guards. These can be signed out from A/V.

The big picture- Josh and Katie

So far, this is what we have decided on, together, for the ACTIVATE!!! project;

  • it is a staring contest between two contestants
  • their stares will be recorded by cameras
  • the recorded stares will be projected on the wall(s) in the passageway
  • the actual event will take place in the lobby (auditorium, room 187?)
  • it is called Staredown, and it's motto is "Dare to Stare?"
Anybody with any more ideas or suggestions please leave them as a comment and I will update this blog. I want to use this blog post to keep everyone up to date with what the concept is. I want to use this blog to coordinate everything, so that everyone can see what's going on.

Teams

Here's is a breakdown on how everyone is divided up;
Coordinators- Katie and Josh

Treasurer- Bradley

Physical logistic group-Desiree(L), Tarz, Steve, Justine, Allan, Laila

Promotions-Cathy(L), Sarah, Humyrha, Jay, Charles

Documentation- Lindsay, Nicole, Alicia

I'm thinking each group should update their posts, including who's in their group now. Everyone should give suggestions through the comments.

Documentation Proposal - Josh, Lindsay, Katie, Bradley

Documentation Team Proposal - Josh, Lindsay, Katie, Brad
After the ACTIVATE event is finished, we would like to create a booklet for each member of the class to have, that would explain the event in full, have photos of the event and include a link to  youtube where a video compilation of clips from the event and set up would be located.
The booklet itself will be well organized and attractive, and will serve as a way for the class to incorporate this piece into their portfolios. The video will be edited and include music to show how the idea developed and how successful it was on the event day.

Possible prize- Documentation team

Final Proposal-Documentation Team-Josh, Lindsay, Katie and Bradley

Staredown-a-mania!
The Activate activity that we have created will be composed of two chairs facing each other in a boxing "ring'. The match will be regulated by a student who will act as the "ref". His duty will be to judge and time each match. Each match will go to three rounds and shouldn't last more than a couple of minutes.
The competitors will give themselves a boxer nickname, which will be placed on the results board, along with a polaroid picture of their stare, their results and their email (optional). The polaroid pictures will be recorded to make an online collage and then offered back to the competitor's at the end of the day. We could offer candy as a prize to the winners.
Two cameras placed behind each competitor will capture the stare of the opposing person. In another part of the Activate area, we will project the recorded stares onto a flat surface. The stares will be fed into an imovie program, and will have new stares constantly added, and played in a loop. this part of the project will be without the boxing aspect and will be used to have people stare back out of curiosity.
At the conclusion of Activate, we can post the results online, along with their rank.
Five stages of engagement
Attraction
There will be an announcer/referee and a boxing ring type setup to draw a crowd to the main event. People will be attracted to the competition and the possibility of winning something. People will feel nostalgic when they realize it is a staring contest. To promote the event we could start putting googly eyes on boxing gloves cut outs around OCAD. We could bombard the school with eyes staring at people from all over.
Entry
The first thing that people will see id the main event of the contest and boxing ring. The announcer or referee will direct the contest, getting people set up to play and telling them when to begin. People who want to compete will have a polaroid taken of their stare for the leaderboard and they will give themselves a "stare-warrior" nickname. Once people either watch or participate, they will exit an area where the footage of the stares will be projected on a wall.
Engagement
Whether they decide to compete or not, viewers will be engaged in the act of watching people watch each other. The discomfort of the contenders will resonate with the people observing. Once people go through the room with the virtual staring contest, they will go from being observers on the outside of the competition to being in the middle of a staring contest. They will exit the area, hopefully feeling disconcerted that they have become the subject of the stares they were an audience to only minutes before.
Extension
The polaroids we will take of the contestants for the leaderboard will be posted to a virtual board with the names, times, etc... We can post some video footage of people staring into the camera so that people at home can simulate the staring contest with the champions at home.

Physical Logistics Group - Stephen, Joe, Cole, Laila

PHYSICAL LOGISTIC FINAL PROPOSAL
by Stephen, Joe, Cole, Laila

The arrangement of the activation project will be taking place in the main lobby in OCAD.
The following diagram of the activation is arranged in the following:
1) 2 projectors will the on the wall.
2) The contestants seating area will be placed in between the projector wall and the camera on the television.

3) The sign up table will be in the middle.
4) The stage exit is located on the left, facing the tally boa
rd, and the donation section.

Basically, we chose the lobby as our favorite location because :

Attraction

-front entrance, people walking through to other events.
-enthusiastic, cheering audience

-competition

Entry

-line up and sign up at desk when turn is up

Engagement

-everyone can join in by looking at the projection of 2 players
-can yell out if noticed someone has lost the staring contest

Exit

-attend to other tables set up

Extension

- when someone loses, and attend the other tables, donation of any change on hand is given

_______________________________________________________________

Lastly, here is our revised storyboard

Virtual Logistice Group- Desiree, Justine, Tarz

Virtual Logistics
To present this project before the event we could have facebook groups and twitter information to let everyone know about what is happening. This could be done with various images of peoples eyes staring out at the viewer on applications such as facebook. We will give information on what is happening, where it is happening and when everything will be taking place. This will also give the possibility to update people with any needed information like location and time.

To virtually present this project during the event we plan to capture it via two laptops with webcams. These laptops will be attached to two projectors which will project the image of the competitors’ eyes in extreme close up onto opposing walls inside the main entrance of the school. This way the bystanders will be able to watch each competitor during their staring match and can see who wins and loses. We will also have one main video camera to capture the entire event as it’s taking place with all it’s surroundings so that when it comes to the final video the viewer can fully comprehend the entirety of the event.

After the event we plan on posting a copy of the videos we have recorded onto youtube with possibly a soundtrack of the class’ choosing that we feel emulates the event. Also, we could have a copy of the video in the library for those who wish to view it at school.

Project 3 - Activate -Temporal Logistics: Alan, Charles, Nicole

Final Project Proposal
Our final proposal is as follows:
There are four people (2 pairs) staring at each other. At each side of the pairs is a video camera that is focusing on their eyes. The four people stare at their partner for a minute at a time, and then two people switch seats to stare with a different person for another minute. The winner/s that win the most out of the two minutes is then able to advance to the next round. The pair's staring will be projected onto the walls.

Stage #1:  Non-distraction round, free round when anyone can join

Stage #2: Distraction round, free round when anyone can join

Stage #3  Winners from round 1 compete to find a staring champion

Prizes are awarded to the champions.

Stage #4  Winners from round 2 compete to find a distraction staring champion

5 Stages of Engagement

Attraction: The game aspect makes it fun, as well as the promise of a champion and a prize. Also the screen projection on the wall lures people in and makes them curious about what is going on.

Entry: Instructions on a board will help people get involved as well as two judges who will guide our players should problems arrive. Also The two judges will sit in chairs around our area and stare at each other to demonstrate what we are doing without using words.

Engagement: People will stay into this with the knowledge of a prize, as well if they are good they have the ability to come back and compete again.

Exit: People will leave when they are done their staring round, unless they are winners in which case they come back and compete until there is a champion.

Extension: We could make a video of the staring people, and possibly incorporate the grand prize at the end with the staring contest.

Activate! Storyboard

A New Persona!! - Nicole Hieter

Works for: Most persona's but goes best with Hippy/Earthy persona.
Works well because: All the things we collect go to charity and the event involves and encourages most people to give and donate.
Extends: By giving clothing to needy people and helping people in the future.

Project Three Provisional Teams and Tasks

Hi Class:

Good work zeroing in on a concept today. There are lots of unanswered questions about our staring contest, but there's also lots of room for growth.

You have volunteered to be part of (or have been assigned to) a provisional team.

Documentation: Katie, Brad, Lindsay, Josh
Promotion: Sarah, Cathy, Jay, Humrya
Virtual Logistics: Justine, Desiree, Tarz
Physical Logistics: Stephen, Joe, Cole, Laila
Temporal Logistics: Alan, Charles, Nicole

In your teams, your tasks for this week are as follows.

1) Develop a fully specified variant on the staring contest concept. Be prepared to present this variant to the class next week, both as a storyboard and through role-playing. Your storyboards and role-plays should be more polished than they were during the individual ideation stage of the Project. Post your new storyboard to the blog, bring a hard copy to class next week, and come to class prepared to role-play your variant. Bring any props you may need for the role-playing, including any necessary A/V equipment.

Contemplate the project in terms of the five phases of a compelling experience that we went over in class: Attraction, Entry, Engagement, Exit and Extension. You should be able to describe how you plan to deal with each of these phases in the context of your variant.

2) Develop a detailed strategy for how to tackle your team's prescribed issue:

Documentation: a proposal for the document (presumably multi-media) you will all take away as a prospective portfolio piece at the end of the Project;
Promotion: a proposal for how to promote the project before, during and after the Activate event, without posters;
Virtual Logistics: a proposal for how to virtually present the project before, during and after the Activate event, through video projection and other means;
Physical Logistics: a proposal for how to physically arrange the project within the bounds of the Activate site, and
Temporal Logistics: a proposal for how to temporally sequence the project requirements during the weeks, days and hours leading up to, during and subsequent to the Activate event.

I look forward to developing this experience together. See you next week.

-Jesse

Dance Like Nobody is watching - The Experience

Persona: An OCAD student or Faculty, most likely shy or conservative

The experience allows people who are otherwise too shy or embarrassed to dance to any kind of music in a closed and personal environment.

I heard many of my friends saying that our school building, the table top (Sharp Centre), is not pretty enough and have a lot of commands. I wonder if other students have the same thoughts or some suggestions and commands. First of all, I find the table top building is really cool and it is such an innovative building. Now this is a chance for OCAD student to redesign or to decorate the appearance of table top.

Wall-libbing
Wall-libbing will be similar to the game ad-libbing, except that it will take place on a wall and the nouns and verbs will be freely selected from a variety of offered choices.
The goal of ad-libbing is to provide its participants a means for public communication by using reusable products and materials.
Material;
  • A selection of nouns and verbs, written on pieces of cardboard
  • Detachable wall hooks
  • String
  • Tape
  • Two boxes
  • One digital camera, with a tripod
  • One projector
  • A laptop
The framework of the sentence will also be written on pieces of cardboard, and affixed to the wall with tape.

Step 1 In figure 1, we see the basic setup; in front of the "phrase" wall are the two boxes containing the nouns and verbs. In front of the boxes and the wall is a digital camera linked to an overhead projector, which is facing another surface.
In figure 2, the participant is making their selection for the phrase.

In figure 3, the participant has finished constructing their sentence. At this point, an overseer of the project will take a picture of the composition.

In figure 4, the overseer has removed the composition and has projected its image onto the other wall. He will place all of the accumulated images and make them into a slide show, so that spectators and participants alike can see the results of the project while it is still active.

The Persona;
  • Type; relatively intelligent person, of any gender, race or class, who likes to anonymously express themselves. May be secretively guilty of writing in bathroom stalls. Curious.
  • Loves; word games, graffitti, art, signs.
  • Hates; Blank spaces, actually writing.
  • Listens to; Radiohead, Rage against the machine, K-OS, politically messaged, street-themed music.
  • Lives; In the annex, Kensington, Downtown.
  • Wears; expensive jeans, Chuck Taylor's , Ironic T-shirts.
  • Looks; observant, curious,

Project three- storyboard By Cathy lai

Ocad is a school that we are all attending, it will be fun if we are more involving in the school.

Step 1.

Choose a white wall from Ocad. The lobby of the main building will be a good idea

Step 2:
Important notes such discount for metro pass will be posted on the wall

Step 3: Everyday, there will be a specific time that allows students to use the pen tablet to express their feeling about Ocad or about themselves or even graffiti . All the notes from student will be project on the wall and at the end of the day, we will project them all over again from the first note to the last one.

The reason i made this is because student rather look at something more digital than reading sticky notes. Moreover, this is a opportunity for us to get well used of Ocad and allows students to communucate more about the school.

Project 2- Final Toy Proposal by Laila Siddiqui

ACTION TWISTER!

WHAT IS IT?
Action Twister is a new, innovative version of the regular game of twister. It is a four player game, and has a similar kind of spinning arrow card that decides what block the player lands on, but instead of having coloured dots, this game has numbered blocks which have different actions on them. So whatever number the spinning arrow lands on, the person has to put one of their 4 free limbs on that number and perform the action associated with it.  The combination of different actions performed at the same time is what makes the game fun!

DEMOGRAPHIC:
This toy/game is designed for users from the age of 15- 25, as this is the age where people are the most active, and still have a streak of childhood in them. However, this game does not limit any age group from playing it as it depends solely on the person's capability to be active and their want for having active fun. The game/toy is intended to be sold at department stores such as Walmart and Zellers, due to its reasonable price range and easy accessibility of the buyers to these stores which are present in almost every corner of the city

WHY IS IT FUN?
Action Twister is going to be a fun game because it will remind its players of their childhood fun playing the regular twister, but this would be a more fun and age appropriate game at this point in their lives. It is more exciting because the players don't only have to play with the coloured dots, they actually have to perform funny actions while playing. This game can turn out to be a huge hit and an ice breaker at get togethers and parties where adults hang out and have a good laugh over the silly actions they had to do with other players. It is a great activity where people actually have to get up and play, and experience feeling young by being active, instead of just sitting in one place, which can be boring.

HOW CAN IT BE MADE MORE INTERESTING IN THE FUTURE?
To make the game/toy more interesting in the future, the makers could change the actions and add new ones, which would intrigue people and make them want to buy it again. Also the change would prevent the game from being monotonous.

Project 3- Storyboard by Laila Siddiqui

Do you want to feel good about yourself today?
Experience:
Ths experience is for all kinds of people who like to hear good things about themselves. it gives them a fun opportunity to feel good about their image.

1) The person enters a room with just a mirror in front of him/her

2) The person looks into the mirror and sees him/herself in it.

3) All of a sudden, the person hears all these different compliments and cheering from different people(only voices can be heard). This makes the person feel good about him/herself and he/she comes out with a positve feeling.

Project 3-Storyboard-Stephen James Legomski

Staring Contest

Staring contest experience is for anyone. There would be multiple people at once for each round. This experience would bring back childhood memories

Project 3 - Storyboard - Lindsay

By attaching a tetherball to either a lamp post or a piece of the OCAD Main Building, the space is being transformed into an area of play. This small addition challenges how we view infrastructural elements in our public space and how this space is meant to be used. Although the addition of a huge tetherball to the OCAD building would make a larger impact because of its size and novelty, this form of urban intervention could be duplicated all over the city through lamp posts. These impromtu areas of play will encourage the public to take better note of their surroundings, to interact in different ways with their physical environment, and to build community with others who occupy the same public space.

Project 3 - Story Board - Sarah Sien

Project 3: Story Board

Tired of having a dull life?
Add some colour to people/environment around you.

Persona:
- OCAD art or design student/faculty
- Anyone who loves to have fun and excitement
- Anyone who loves art or design
- Anyone who are outgoing
- Anyone who loves colour

Each participant will be given:
- A water gun with watercolor/paint.
- White outerwear to cover up

The space will be surrounded and covered with layers of white cloth/curtain.

There will be different sizes of canvas acting as obstacles/hiding place inside the area.

Each participant/team will have a water gun with different color of paint inserted. They will run around and shoot the other players as much as they can within the time limit. As they move around, part of their body might be caught on the canvas/curtain. Some might choose to pose for others in front of the canvas so that a white silhouette will appear.

Note: There will be no refill so it will be smart to make good use of the paint and save some for the end. There will be a time limit and the game will end early if every player ran out of paint.

Everything is reusable, students may take the canvas/cloth home for decoration or we can leave it at OCAD or donate it to other school or gallery.

Project 3- Story Board- Desiree Beaubien

L I F E -in a new way

Purpose- to experience LIFE in an afternoon by playing a real live version of the board game

First we would create a life size board game- this could be done through drawing on the path or sidewalk with chalk, spray painted on the grass, rope on the grass dividing a square pathway etc.

We would create cars out of boxes very simply and paint them different colours (red, green, blue, yellow, orange)

Dress student in blue and pink garbage bags- depending on gender- cut hole in top for head and holes in sides for arms
we would construct a spinning wheel like the wheel in the actual board game for the movement of players.

1- students dress in garbage bags and choose car

2- students would spin the wheel to decide who goes first

3- students would choose to go to one of two places (school or work)
a. option variations:
i. school or work
ii. OCAD or work
iii. Design Stream or Art Stream

4-students travel along path collecting money and paying taxes just like the real game of life.

5-students will then get married and choose a spouse to travel in the car with them (have a person standing to the side to pretend to marry the two individuals under a constructed archway.)

6- then students will choose a house to buy for their life with their spouse. These houses will be cardboard cutouts that they can carry in their car with them while continuing the game. (houses can include studio apartment in Toronto, house, mobile home, etc.)

7- now the students will have children( we will use dolls) and they will choose from a deck of cards that could say things like:

Congradulations: it’s twins/ it’s a boy/ it’s a girl/ you have now become the Pit’s and have adopted the entire box of babies.

*students then continue along the pathway until they reach the end*

8- the students can now retire and cash in their earnings they have collected throughout the game with the LIFE Money and buy candy with it at the end of the game when they park their cars in our designated parking zone.

All materials would be recyclable(cardboard) or could be donated afterwards to the school or other administration.

Project 3 Storyboard : Tarz Sachdeva

What would you like to say to your doctor?
PERSONA:
  • OCAD student/Faculty
  • loves colours
  • a reserved person
EXPERIENCE:
This interactive experience is intended for those people who think doctors are geniuses but do not have the courage to tell so. This is the opportunity for them to write a nice heartfelt message to all the doctors out there. The interaction process is as follows:Each person is provided with a lab coat, then a group of about 6-7 people go into a dark room with a marker.

And when they come out after a minute, they all look like this with something written on each person's coat for a doctor. In this one minute they have the opportunity to write as much as they want on anyone they can get hold of.(Same process is repeated with the same lab coats with another groups after and so on.)
The fun part is that since it is done in a dark room, things are not written in an orderly fashion. So at the end, when it is all read together it would be something nice but at the same time some thing funny to put together.

The best part is that these coats(total 6-7) can then be given out to hospitals/clinics to be displayed so that people can read nice things about doctors.
